Coverage and Jurisdiction

The Henderson Police Department serves the city of Henderson, Minnesota.  Our office is located in the Henderson Community Center. 

As of June 2026, we maintain a department of a full-time Chief of Police, one full-time officer, and two part-time officers.  We aim for coverage during peak call hours as close as possible for 365 days a year.   Emergency and urgent call coverage when a member of the Henderson Police Department is unavailable is managed by the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office.  Other calls, as well as follow-up on calls originally taken by the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office, will be managed by a member of the Henderson Police Department as soon as possible. 

Our Dispatch service is provided by the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office.   

Medical and fire calls are managed by Henderson Fire and Rescue.  Calls originating in the adjacent communities of Henderson Township and Jessenland are managed by the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office.  Calls originating east of the Minnesota River on MN 19 are managed by the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office.  Calls originating at the Henderson Boat Launch/Landing are managed by the Law Enforcement division of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.   The Henderson Police Department may assist these agencies per their request and/or in emergency situations. 

Permits and Registrations

ATV/Golf Cary Permits and Dog Registration applications are available in hard copy at City Hall.   

ATV/Golf Cart Permits 

All ATVs and Golf Carts in operation within City of Henderson limits must be road-worthy and insured, and require a permit for use.  Current permits will be issued and valid through December 31, 2028.  One permit per ATV/Golf Cart; permits may not be transferred to another ATV/Golf Cart.  Permits may be revoked based on equipment concerns and unsafe or improper operation.   ATVs and Golf Cart users must avoid Main Street/MN 19 whenever possible.  Operation of any and all motorized or electronic mobility devices on the levee is strictly forbidden. 

Cost: $10.00 per permit; cash or check.  Provide insurance information with application.

Dog Registration 

The city of Henderson registers but does not license dogs.   All dogs must have valid vaccination papers at all times.  One registration application per dog.  Residents may keep up to three dogs at their residence.  Special temporary circumstances will be considered on a case by case basis by the Chief of Police.  Owners of registered dogs must be in compliance with existing City of Henderson Ordinances at all times.  Remember to keep your dog leashed in public or in non-fenced residences at all times.

Cost: $5.00 per permit; cash or check.  Provide vaccination papers with application.

Peddler & Solicitor Permits

All peddlers and solicitors must apply for a permit to operate within the city of Henderson.  Peddlers and solicitors must have visual identification of their business with them, a copy of their permit issued by the Henderson Police Department at all times, and exhibit exemplary courtesy and respect towards our community and its residents and business owners at all times.

Services

Alongside emergency calls for service, traffic enforcement, and routine patrol, the Henderson Police Department processes ATV Permits, Dog Registrations, Trespass Notices, requests for Data Releases, and conducts City Ordinance enforcement and investigation.

We also assist with the following:

  • Law enforcement agencies conducting background checks for employment, permits to purchase firearms, and permits for concealed carry.
  • Firearms, ammunition and medication disposals.
  • Residence Watches upon request of property owners.
  • Directing individuals and families towards appropriate federal, state, county and non-governmental organizations when and where possible.

Our agency maintains its licensure through the Minnesota Peace Officer Board of Standards and Training, colloquially known as the POST Board.   You may visit their website at https://mn.gov/post/ .

Our Policy Manual, last updated in June of 2026, is available for viewing online.  An up-to-date physical copy of our police manual is available for public use at the Henderson Public Library at 110 South 6th Street, and at the City Office in the Community Building.
